Launch More ARTs and Value Streams

“Unite the improvement and gain for developing more change” is the next step towards success, when the basic steps are already completed such as in implementing SAFe. Till now, the steps in implementing covers all the training from higher to team level, held all events, workshop PI planning, and iterations. This allows the opportunities in large businesses to gain more business benefits giving more chances to produce a further gain by implementing SAFe. The first ART has created an effective pattern and focused on the addition of ARTs in value streams.

This step of adding further ARTs and value streams will make enterprises gain more return on their investments. This will provide faster delivery to the market, high productivity and quality, and increased employee engagement.

Launch ARTs

Up till now, enterprises have understood the adding advantage of more ARTs as it provides large returns. In the process, there is only a need to repeat the similar steps of the first ARTs which are

  • Preparing for ART launch

  • Training the team and launching ART

  • Train ART executives

But while it moves towards the second or furthermore it is needed to be done with the same devotion as the first one is done, without assuming that everyone now understands it thoroughly.

Implement Large Solution Roles, Artifacts, and Events

As we already know larger value stream requires developing enterprise solution deliver competency. Similarly, a high assuring system requires the same précised system and activities. To accomplish these responsibilities SPC, leaders, and LACE must play an active role and complete tasks like

  • Establish Role

  • Establish Solution Intent

  • Establish a large vision of solutions and roadmaps

  • Introduce capabilities and backlogs

  • Integrate suppliers

  • Implement pre and post-PI planning, demos and inspect and adapt.

Launch more Value Streams

Even though the first value stream is launched and all seems to be set but that is not the end in larger enterprises as they have to convey the development at a higher operating level due to various aspects of their broadly spread businesses. Because they may think that what worked at one should not surely work at their workplace. So it is necessary to develop every new value stream as new, which consists of challenges and opportunities described previously, and follow the same series of steps to launch every value stream.

This will be the time to introduce the introduction-based implementation approach helping in buy-in and shaping a path further. This also provides a chance to explore and reflect on previous principles one of which is illustrated in the implementation of the railway.

SAFe Implementation Railway

The implementation railway board was the concept the SAFe team observed in their visit to folks during rollout. This experience was further included as the study and guidance for the SAFe implementation railway. It consists of

1. Four States of Railway

It is operated on the Kanban board which consist of four states as below

  • Input funnel- It is used for numerous purposes but its primary role is to be an opportunity for stakeholders to volunteer for the value stream for transformation.

  • Transformation Backlog- It is to do state. Value stream states in this state till the below criteria are fulfilled

§ Leadership prepared

§ ARTs identified

§ Development value stream defined

§ SPCs are trained

  • Track- In this, the Art is structured, launched, and operated to achieve the developing value stream. The tracks consist of two ways first on a small number of tracks and secondly, there can be only ‘n’ number of trains on tracks.

  • Sustain and improve- Once an ART is an independent train is further moved towards sustaining and improving the state of Big Visible Information Radiator (BVIR).

2. The Track

The track is the place where transformation mainly takes place. The stations represent the maturity of ART on tracks. The stations on tracks are as follows

  • Identify Station

  • Preparation Station

  • Launch Station

  • First PI Station

  • Second PI Station

  • Aftercare Station

Managing Impediments

“Have fun with work. Making work fun brings success to those who do.”

Understanding this the folks who generated the implementation railway board had fun with their obstacles as below:

  • Impediment Cow- It is necessary to transform the culture and one of the key aspects in culture is an obstacle. Which is called the impediment cow- a cow on a track.

  • Back Story of Cow- This is an example where the cow indicates as an obstacle so whenever there seems any issue the cow is taken and placed in the implementation board which is a fun activity as well as draws immediate attention towards it.

As this step of implementation of SAFe covers most of the work it requires urgency, leadership, persistence, and active removal of barriers. This step will ensure the active running of the value stream and trains and help us to move further towards our next step ‘extend to a portfolio.’
