Coach ART Executives

We have reached up to the key point of SAFe implementation where we have long crossed the path of the first major event where up till now a team has been trained, ART launch is completed, and the first PI planning event is also held. Now the team will be moving forward towards working on the train. All the previous events and training will make agile teams an agile, empowered, and the engaged team as we need agile working that are ready to create a solution that delivers value.

But one must understand that the training and planning only cannot build the agile approach of teams and ARTs. Planning and training provide the opportunity for starting agile. As it is stated, “a team is a reflection of its leadership.” SAFe coaches and program consultant guides the agile journey. They understood that knowledge is not equal to the understanding they both are different things. This understanding takes the extra effort in coaching the agile executives as they know agile practices and behavior take time to be implemented for the effective team level.

To reach the level of this understanding the enterprises have done an important investment for developing SAFe Program Consultants (SPC) agents and stakeholders to change their way of working and hence the agile team working. The leaders and SPC agents assure that the focus is all on the important matter and somewhere else. The important aspect they focus on is:

  • The value delivery in the shortest possible time is up to the highest quality.

  • They achieve this by starting from the team and ART coaching which are mentioned in detail below,

Team Coaching

As the program level competency is dependent on the team and technical agility it is necessary for SPCs and leaders to also provide training to agile teams and concentrate on it, though they are focused on enabling the program level events and responsibilities of different roles. This training mainly consists of conquering the team level SAFe events and roles that include

  • Iteration planning- The iteration plans that are developed during the PI planning are refined and adjusted as per requirement at the initial level.

  • Daily Stand-Ups-To support teams in focused and aligned towards iteration goals, get help, and voice out obstructions.

  • Backlog Refinement- The scope and definition of user stories that are defined at the PI planning.

  • System Demos and Iteration Reviews-Gets feedback from the stakeholders and evaluates the progress of the defined PI objectives.

  • Scrum of Scrum, PO Sync, and ART Sync-To maintain the alignment with other related teams and resolve issues related to those teams.

  • Iteration Retrospectives-Revise and analyze team practices and recognize ways of improvement.

But this is only the starting of the team coaching, as this first step builds confidence and transparency within the team about their roles and responsibility. Next, teams need to be proficient in software engineering techniques and disciplines to provide a consistent flow of value. The courses of agile software engineering are continuously evolving with time providing innovative and continuous education.

ART Coaching

Along with teams and technical agility, it is necessary to obtain agile product delivery competency. As this competency provides the short sustainability lead time value so the SPCs and leaders involve with scrum masters along ARTs to master this competency. Its start roles and events include

  • PI planning

  • System Demo

  • Inspect and Adapt workshop

  • Scrum of a scrum, PO Sync, and ART Sync

But it’s only the surface of ART purpose and potential. To obtain the optimized flow of value SPCs must train Art leaders to look beyond the present PI and capabilities. Further training is to be concentrated on the delivery pipeline and competency of agile product delivery which involves managing and improving quality and accelerating ARTs capabilities to obtain

  • Continuously Explore- The continuous exploration of market need is done and improvement in product vision, roadmap, backlog, and architecture are performed.

  • Continuously integrate-Learn, validate and create from the working systems

  • Continuously Deploy-Deliver confirmed features in manufacture where they are set to go.

Inspect and Adapt

Inspect and adapt workshop is the first very critical coaching opportunity as it defines how well the enterprise is adapting to SAFe and the solution they created is working. At this step, the SPCs and leaders can take the corrective measure required by the problem-solving workshop.

This provides teams with tools for improving and a chance to work with the management stakeholders.

“The single biggest way to impact on an organization is to focus on leadership development”, by successfully implementing the ‘coaching of executives we will be able to see the practical example of an above-stated quote. This step will impact the organization more towards an agile way of working.
